Big news for surf fans! Abu Dhabi is set to make waves in the surfing world with its massive artificial wave pool being added to the World Surf League's (WSL) 2025 world tour. The announcement came on Thursday, revealing that Fiji will host the finals event to crown the world champions.

Kicking Off in Hawaii

The surfing tour kicks off in late January at Hawaii's iconic Banzai Pipeline, known for its thrilling and dangerous waves. After that, surfers will head to the Surf Abu Dhabi wave pool for the first time, making it a historic addition to the tour.

What Makes Abu Dhabi’s Wave Pool Special?

The Abu Dhabi wave pool spans a whopping 75,000 square meters and utilizes the same cutting-edge technology as California’s Surf Ranch. This technology was developed with the expertise of Kelly Slater, an 11-time world champion. While the Surf Ranch has hosted various world tour events, it has received mixed reviews, so it'll be interesting to see how Abu Dhabi's pool is received.

Finals in Fiji

The grand finale will take place at Teahupo'o in Tahiti, which is also the venue for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The top five-ranked men and women after the regular season will qualify for a one-day finals event in Fiji. This shift to Fiji’s Cloudbreak reef, known for its powerful barrels and long walls, has been praised by both surfers and fans alike, especially after the past four years at the softer waves of Lower Trestles in California.
