Suhail Star Sighting in UAE Signals End of Peak Summer

The Suhail star was spotted in the UAE's skies at 5:20 a.m. today, marking the beginning of the end of the intense summer heat. The celestial event, captured by Tamim Al-Tamimi and shared by Storm Centre on X, provides a visual sign of seasonal change.

Suhail's appearance, described in an Arab saying as a signal that "if Suhail rises, the night cools down," hints at the gradual shift from sweltering days to cooler nights. While an immediate drop in temperatures is unlikely, a gradual decrease in night-time warmth will soon be noticeable.

According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, Suhail began to be visible at dawn from August 24. This sighting initiates a transitional weather phase:

  • Sufriya: Expect around 40 days of shifting temperatures between peak summer and cooler weather.
  • Wasm: By mid-October, weather patterns will start to stabilize.
  • Winter: The cool season will commence approximately 100 days post-Suhail’s rise.

Known as the 'Star of Yemen,' Suhail plays a pivotal role in Arab traditions and is integral to the 'Durur' calendar, marking distinct phases of the year.
