RTA Completes Al Khail Road Upgrade Across 7 Locations

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has successfully completed the Al Khail Road Development Project. This large-scale upgrade involved the construction of five bridges, spanning a total of 3,300 metres, and road widening efforts covering 6,820 metres across seven key locations. These improvements, situated in areas such as Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle, will benefit around 1.5 million people. The project is expected to reduce travel time by 30%, while also boosting the capacity of key intersections and bridges to handle up to 19,600 vehicles per hour.

These enhancements are designed to improve overall traffic flow on Al Khail Road, eliminate traffic congestion at interchanges, and ensure a smoother driving experience across the city.

Efficient Construction Methods

To complete the project in record time, the RTA implemented a new strategy by awarding contracts to multiple construction companies, reducing the original 18-month timeline to just nine months—an impressive 80% reduction. A workforce of 5,000 engineers and laborers was mobilized, contributing six million work hours and utilizing 650 machines daily.

Key Strategic Road Network

The Al Khail Road Development Project is part of Dubai’s larger plan to enhance its road network, which runs parallel to major highways such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. This five-lane arterial road, which expands to more than six lanes in certain areas, starts at Business Bay Crossing and extends to its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

Seven Major Locations Enhanced

1. Zabeel: A 700-metre bridge was constructed, improving the connection between Zabeel Palace Street and Al Khail Road, adding capacity for 4,800 vehicles per hour.

2. Meydan: A 610-metre bridge now links Meydan Street with Al Khail Road, offering two lanes that accommodate up to 3,200 vehicles per hour. The project also involved surface road improvements along 1,550 metres.

3. Al Quoz 1: A 650-metre bridge was added, with improvements to over 2,170 metres of surface roads, creating better traffic links between Al Khail Road, Al Waha Street, and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street.

4. Ghadeer Al Tair: A 640-metre bridge and surface road upgrades provide smoother connections from Latifa Bint Hamdan Street to Al Khail Road, easing traffic flow towards Deira.

5. Jumeirah Village Circle: A 700-metre bridge and 900-metre road improvements connect Al Khail Road to Hessa Street, boosting traffic capacity by 3,200 vehicles per hour.

6. Al Jaddaf: A new 600-metre lane was added to Al Khail Road, enhancing traffic flow towards Deira and increasing capacity by 2,000 vehicles per hour.

7. Business Bay: A 435-metre lane was added at the Business Bay entrance, ensuring smoother traffic flow from Al Khail Road toward Jebel Ali.
