Biometric ID system will soon go digital, using facial recognition via smart apps instead of physical cards

The UAE is preparing to ditch physical Emirates ID cards in favor of a high-tech alternative powered by facial recognition and artificial intelligence. The new biometric system, developed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security, is expected to roll out across the country within the next year.
Once fully implemented, residents will be able to use facial scans via the Authority’s smart app to access a wide range of services—no card required.
AI-powered ID aims to speed up services
The new digital ID system will first launch in phases, focusing on essential services. It’s designed to make identity verification quicker, safer, and more convenient, removing the hassle of carrying and presenting physical documents.
Authorities say the system has already gone through testing and is ready for a gradual launch.
A step forward in UAE’s digital transformation
This shift is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to become a fully digital nation. The goal is to simplify how residents interact with services—whether it’s government processes, banking, telecom, healthcare, or hospitality.
The plan was confirmed after a Federal National Council member raised a question about the future of digital ID in the UAE. Officials responded by confirming the system is ready and will be introduced soon.
What this means for residents
For most people, it means faster service and less paperwork. With facial recognition built into the official app, residents will be able to identify themselves in seconds—without needing to carry an Emirates ID or remember extra credentials.
It’s a major step in redefining how ID works in everyday life, and one more sign that the UAE is racing ahead with its digital future.
