Kunafa is a popular traditional Middle Eastern dessert made with crunchy shredded phyllo dough called kataifi, soaked in a sweet, sugar-based syrup called attar, and typically layered with pistachio or nuts.

Kunafa

1 box of kataifi dough
⅓ cup white sugar
1 cup unsalted butter
½ cup crushed pistachios to garnish

Syrup

2 cups sugar
1 ½ cup water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon vanilla
  • Method & Directions

  1. Shred kataifi

    Shred frozen kataifi dough with your hand or in a food processor until the strands are about 2cm.
  2. Add sugar and butter

    Pour the dough into a large mixing bowl and add the sugar and melted butter on top and massage with your hand until you fully saturate it.
  3. Spread the dough into the pan

    Brush your pan with some of the melted butter and evenly spread the dough and firmly press it.
  4. Bake it

    Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 30-35 minutes until it is deeply golden.
  5. Prepare syrup

    Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan, bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium.
  6. Stir constantly

    Stir the mixture constantly for 5 to 7 minutes until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is thickened. Remove from heat and add lemon juice and vanilla.
  7. Remove kunafa from the oven

    Remove kunafa from the oven, pour the syrup over it, cut it into pieces.
  8. Serve

    Garnish kunafa with pistachio or any of your favorite nuts and serve it.
