Ramadan Recipe: Ouzi Rice

Ouzi Rice is a traditional dish from the Middle Eastern Cuisine. Many countries are famous for their Ouzi such as Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. This rice dish is made of a mixture of short-grain and long-grain rice, peas, carrots, and beef. It is flavored with cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, 7 spice mix, and others. In some countries, this dish is made with lamb meat – but to make preparing Iftar easier, this recipe will include ground beef instead.

Ingredients of Ouzi Rice

- 300 Calories
- 1 small onion, diced
- 250 grams of ground beef
- 1 tbsp cooking oil
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¼ 7 spices
Beef
- 1 cup short grain rice
- 1 cup long grain rice
- 2 cups of hot water
- 1 bag frozen peas and carrots
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp cardamom
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- ½ tbsp salt, adjust to taste
- ¼ tsp turmeric
Rice
- ¼ cup almonds, halves or silvers
- 4 tbsp cooking oil

Method & Directions of Ouzi Rice

- 60 Minutes
- Wash and Soak Your Rice
تم نسخ الرابطMix 1 cup of long-grain rice with 1 cup of short-grain rice together. Wash thoroughly and soak in boiling water.
- Cook the Beef
تم نسخ الرابطIn a hot oiled pan, sauté an onion until translucent then add the ground beef to it. Keep breaking it apart to cook evenly. Add the black pepper, 7 spices, and some salt.
- Prepare the Veggies
تم نسخ الرابطIn a large pot, heat some oil and use 1 bag of frozen peas and carrots. Sauté well and season with black pepper, cardamom, salt, and turmeric.
- Cook the Rice
تم نسخ الرابطStrain the rice and add it to the veggie mix and sauté for a few minutes. Take half of the cooked beef and add it in. Mix everything well then add in the water until the rice is covered. Bring to a boil, then cover and let it simmer, and cook on low heat for 15 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked.
- Toast the Almonds
تم نسخ الرابطIn another pan, heat up your oil and toast your almonds in it. Make sure to stir repeatedly so they get equally golden-brown.
- Serve!
تم نسخ الرابطIn a serving dish, spread and fluff your Ouzi and top it with the beef and almonds. Serve it with a side of a green salad, plain yogurt, or a cucumber and yogurt salad.
Mixing long-grain rice with short-grain rice ensures you get fully cooked fluffy rice.
You can use fresh carrots if desired, just make sure they are sautéed well. Also, you can use canned peas, but you must drain and wash them well.
