New Bridge Cuts Travel Time to 3 Minutes on Hessa Street

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially opened a major two-lane bridge spanning 1,000 metres to improve traffic flow from Hessa Street to Al Khail Road. This development is part of the larger Hessa Street development project, designed to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times across key areas in Dubai.

Faster Travel Times

The newly opened bridge significantly cuts travel time between Hessa Street and Al Khail Road, reducing the journey from 15 minutes to just 3 minutes. This improvement ensures smoother access to Dubai’s city centre and Dubai International Airport.

Progress Update on Hessa Street Development

The RTA announced that 54% of the Hessa Street development project has been completed. This project includes upgrading four major intersections and expanding the road’s capacity. Full completion is expected by the fourth quarter of 2025.

Key Features of the Hessa Street Project

  • Expanded Road Capacity: Hessa Street is being widened from two lanes to four lanes in each direction, doubling its capacity to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour.

  • Cycling and E-Scooter Tracks: The project includes a 13.5 km cycling and e-scooter track, promoting sustainable mobility and improving first and last-mile connectivity.

  • Total Investment: The project’s total cost is AED 689 million.

Enhanced Connectivity for Growing Communities

The project spans 4.5 km, connecting Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road. It serves key residential areas such as Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle. By 2030, these areas are projected to host over 640,000 residents, making the upgrades essential to meet growing demand.

Intersection Upgrades

The Hessa Street development project focuses on four major intersections:

  1. Sheikh Zayed Road: A two-lane directional ramp will pass over the Dubai Metro’s Red Line, facilitating right-turn traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Hessa Street.

  2. First Al Khail Road: The existing bridge will expand from three to four lanes in each direction, along with surface-level traffic improvements.

  3. Al Asayel Street: The current bridge will also be widened to four lanes in each direction, enhancing traffic flow at the signalised intersection.

  4. Al Khail Road: A two-lane direct ramp will ensure seamless traffic movement from Hessa Street toward Sharjah.

Cycling and Scooter Tracks: Promoting Sustainable Mobility

The project’s cycling and e-scooter tracks will connect Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills, serving residential hubs like Al Barsha and Barsha Heights. Key features include:

  • Two iconic pedestrian and cyclist bridges over Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, each five metres wide.

  • Improved access to Dubai Internet City Metro Station and nearby commercial areas.

  • Track capacity to accommodate up to 5,200 users per hour.

A Vision for Dubai’s Future

This ambitious project, carried out under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, reflects Dubai’s commitment to developing world-class infrastructure. As Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA, stated, these upgrades align with Dubai’s urban development goals and its growing population needs.

With enhanced traffic flow, sustainable mobility options, and seamless connections to key areas, the Hessa Street development project is set to transform the city’s transport network, benefiting both residents and visitors alike.
