Maurizio Cattelan's 'Comedian' Heads to Dubai for One Day

Maurizio Cattelan's buzzworthy artwork "Comedian"—the infamous banana duct-taped to a wall—will be on display in Dubai for just one day on November 4.

The artwork is part of a world tour leading up to its auction in New York, where it's expected to fetch at least AED 3.6 million.

The fleeting Dubai showcase at Sotheby’s in DIFC may be one of the last opportunities to view this divisive piece before it possibly disappears into a private collection.

The "Comedian" gained notoriety during its debut at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019, where it attracted huge crowds, sparked debates, and had to be removed early due to the frenzy it caused. Two previous editions of the artwork have even been eaten—once by Georgian performance artist David Datuna and another time by a hungry student. Yes. The artwork uses a real banana.

Cattelan’s piece challenges conventional notions of what qualifies as art, with the artist himself describing it as a sincere commentary on value and the art market. Whether viewed as a satire or a masterpiece, "Comedian" has certainly left its mark on contemporary art.

The exhibit in Dubai will be part of a global tour that includes stops in New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo.
