Humanity Wins as Over 10,000 People Register for Organ Donation

Since the country's law was passed in 2016 permitting organ transplants from both the living and the dead, more than 10,000 people in Abu Dhabi have registered to become organ donors to support the National Programme for Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation (Hayat).

People of various ages, origins and countries had joined, according to the emirate's Department of Health (DoH). On Friday, the emirate's Department of Health made a significant announcement and encouraged more individuals to sign up for the program. The National Programme for Organ Donation and Transplantation, often known as Hayat, which is Arabic for "life," was introduced in November.

The initiative attempts to inspire community members to support the cause and donate to help patients with organ failure live better lives. Anyone in the UAE over the age of 21 who has an Emirates ID and is certified brain dead may register their request to donate organs under the program.

Since human organ trafficking is illegal in the UAE, there is no compensation for organ donation, and organ transplants can only be performed at a limited number of hospitals. Listed below are the approved hospitals to perform organ transplants:

  • Human Organs and Tissues Transplantation Centre at Al Qassimi Hospital (Sharjah)
  • Mediclinic Hospital (Dubai)
  • Cleveland Clinic Hospital (Abu Dhabi)
  • Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (Abu Dhabi)
  • Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (Abu Dhabi)
  • Dubai Hospital (Dubai)
  • Al Jalila Specialist Hospital for Children (Dubai)

The donor will be given an electronic donor card once registration is complete.
