Dubai's Ruler Sheikh Mohammed Announces Second Moon Mission

Vice President of UAE and the Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid announced on Wednesday that the UAE will make a second attempt at landing a rover on the Moon.

Sheikh Mohammed said Rashid Rover 2 would be developed and sent to space. He made the announcement after communication was lost with the spacecraft carrying the Rashid Rover on Wednesday morning, therefore the space engineers could only predict that the spacecraft had made a hard landing on the lunar surface.

Sheikh Mohammed visited the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) where he met the team leading the country's space mission and shared the plan to develop the new Rashid Rover, however, he did not set a date for the second attempt.

He also shared a tweet on Twitter in which he emphasized the UAE's ambition to make a second attempt at reaching the moon.

He visited the centre with the Crown Prince of Dubai Sheikh Hamdan who also stressed the importance of taking risks to make a second attempt at UAE's mission to the moon.

Both Rovers are named after Sheikh Mohammed's late father Sheikh Rashid who was the founder of modern Dubai. The MBRSC's 11 engineers took six years to build the rover.

Rashid Rover 1 was UAE's first mission to the moon, which was developed under the UAE's local Moon exploration programme.
