Dubai to Launch One of the World's Largest Marine Reef Projects

Dubai seems to not be able to stop flexing with their groundbreaking achievements, and we’re here for it. Now they're at it again with the instantly iconic Dubai Reef. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Crown Prince, has made it official during COP28 summit at Expo City. This glitzy project, which was first announced earlier this year in May, is set to kick off in 2024. Let us tell you, this will not be an ordinary project. It's expected to be one of the biggest marine reef developments to ever exist, covering a whopping 600 square kilometres of coastline from the Palm Jebel Ali to Dubai Islands. Dubai Reef’s main goal is to make us realize how important it is to live in harmony with the ocean (as if we didn't already know).

Dubai to Launch One of the World's Largest Marine Reef Projects
Here's the breakdown of this mammoth plan: over 400,000 cubic metres of coral reefs are going to be created in not just one but four phases. They're one upping themselves with over 20,000 reef modules. The masterminds behind this project are hoping to boost the fish and biomass population by eight times within the next 10 years.

Oh, that's not all! Dubai Reef will also be capturing a whopping seven million tonnes of carbon annually, which is the same as taking 1.5 million cars off the road. If you haven’t noticed, The UAE is on a green mission, folks. They're dead set on achieving climate neutrality by 2050, and this new offering is just another step towards that grand goal.
