Tech billionaire Elon Musk and his The Boring Company have signed a deal to build the Las Vegas-style underground road network in Dubai, which will be called the Dubai Loop.
The tech tycoon and UAE's AI minister Omar Al Olama announced the project on the final day of the World Governments Summit on Thursday, Feb. 13.
The Boring Company will work with the Dubai authorities will research constructing tunnels that will carry vehicles underneath the city, similar to the Las Vegas Loop.
Elon Musk said about the project, "It's going to be like a wormhole, from one part of the city, boom, and you're at another part of the city, and it's great. We look forward to his partnership."
UAE's AI Minister explained that the project would cover "Dubai's most densely populated areas for people to go from point to point, in a seamless manner".
The Dubai Government also shared a picture of Dubai's Crown Prince His Highness Sheikh Hamdan overseeing the signing of the deal with Boring Company officials.
The government plans to build a 17km system with 11 stations, which would carry 20,000 passengers per hour.
The Dubai Loop will be like the Las Vegas Loop which runs underneath the convention centre. It took two years to build the tunnels in Las Vegas and five stations for 70 driverless vehicles to navigate.
