Dubai Police's cutting-edge smart cameras are making sure no traffic violation goes unnoticed, as highlighted in a warning issued by the authorities on Friday. The latest incidents caught on camera revealed alarming cases of distracted driving that are putting road safety at risk.

One shocking example involved a female driver using not one, but two phones while behind the wheel. In a snapshot shared by the police on X (formerly known as Twitter), she is seen holding both devices to her ears, leaving her unable to control the steering wheel with her hands.

In another startling capture, a driver was spotted reading a newspaper while driving. The newspaper, held directly in front of her, completely blocked her view of the road and the oncoming traffic, significantly heightening the risk of an accident.

Dubai’s traffic monitoring systems are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies capable of detecting such violations, even when windshields are heavily tinted, according to the police.

Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic, emphasized the force’s commitment to leveraging smart tech to boost road safety and ensure strict enforcement of traffic rules. “We are actively investing in smart traffic technologies to promote road safety and security,” he said.

He further reminded drivers that repeated violations such as mobile phone usage, tailgating, and sudden lane changes could lead to their vehicles being impounded for up to 30 days. This impoundment would be an additional measure on top of fines ranging from Dh400 to Dh1,000 and four black points.

“The advanced systems are designed to detect various violations, including not wearing seat belts, mobile phone use, and other distractions,” Al Mazrouei added. “They can even capture these offenses when the vehicle’s windscreen is tinted.”

The implementation of these smart technologies supports Dubai’s goal of becoming a global leader in traffic safety and aligns with its strategic objective to reduce road accident fatalities.
