Dubai Police Seize About 9,000 E-Scooters and Bicycles in Six Months

During the first half of this year, Dubai Police seized 8,786 bicycles and electric bikes under new rules that were introduced in March 2022 to improve safety.

The new rules state that anyone riding any type of electric bike must have a driving licence permit issued by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The rules also state that riders younger than 16 years old are not permitted to operate an electric bike, e-scooter or any other type of bike specified by the RTA.

Failure to adhere to the technical specifications surrounding bikes can lead to their confiscation for 30 days if the violations are repeated within a year and a ban on riding the bike for a specific period.

This comes in line with ongoing efforts to make Dubai a bicycle-friendly city.

Similarly, more than 4,000 vehicles were also confiscated during the first six months of 2023 for violating traffic laws. These include actions like upgrading cars extensively with power boosters to increase the engine speed and disturbing and troubling people.

The announcement of the bike and vehicle seizure was reported during the General Department of Traffic performance evaluation meeting for the second quarter of the current year.
