The Dubai Police have introduced a strict new penalty for certain traffic offences, with vehicles now being impounded for up to 30 days. Offences like using mobile phones while driving, tailgating, and sudden lane deviation are among the violations that will lead to this punishment.

Fines and Black Points

Under federal traffic laws, offenders face fines ranging from AED 400 to AED1,000, along with 4 black points on their driving record. With the latest amendment, Dubai now imposes an additional 30-day vehicle impoundment for these violations.

Offences Leading to 30-Day Impoundment

According to the Official Gazette, which Khaleej Times reviewed, using mobile devices while driving is considered distracted driving and will result in the 30-day impound. Other violations include:

  • Sudden deviation that endangers lives or property
  • Tailgating, or not leaving a safe distance between vehicles
  • Heavy vehicles failing to adhere to lane discipline

Additional 14-Day Impound Penalties

The new amendment also outlines a 14-day impoundment for several other violations, including:

  • Entering the road without ensuring it is clear
  • Reversing dangerously or in a way that threatens safety
  • Lane indiscipline
  • Stopping on the road without reason
  • Dangerous overtaking
  • Lack of necessary vehicle safety features
  • Stopping or overtaking on the road shoulder in non-emergencies
  • Driving without a licence plate
  • Driving in a way that obstructs traffic
  • Changing vehicle color without permission

Prior Penalties for Reckless Driving

This new amendment is part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety in Dubai. Last year, the authorities introduced a Dh50,000 fee to release vehicles impounded for serious traffic offences like reckless driving and running red lights. Since then, numerous motorists have faced severe penalties.

The Impact of Reckless Driving

Reckless driving was the cause of 94 accidents in Dubai during the first six months of 2024 alone. Despite awareness campaigns, distracted driving remains a common issue. A survey conducted by RoadSafetyUAE and Al Wathba Insurance revealed that while 90% of drivers acknowledge the dangers of distracted driving, only 81% said they always remain fully focused on the road.

As Dubai continues to tighten its traffic regulations, authorities hope these penalties will serve as a deterrent, making the roads safer for everyone.
