‘Kamala is Brat’: Harris’ Campaign Embraces Charli XCX Trend

If someone calls Democratic presidential contender Kamala Harris a brat, it might actually be a compliment.

As endorsements for the vice president in the 2024 presidential race poured in on Sunday, pop star Charli XCX also chimed in with high praise.

“Kamala IS brat,” the British singer and songwriter posted on X, and the message quickly went viral.

By midday Monday, Harris' campaign had embraced the meme. The banner on its X page now read “Kamala HQ” with a neon green background and lower-case letters, mirroring the style of Charli XCX’s album "Brat," which debuted at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart last month and has led many in Gen Z to dub 2024 as "brat summer."

Charli XCX explained to the BBC that a 'brat' is someone genuine and self-possessed, with a rebellious streak. “She feels like herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of, like, parties through it. Is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Does dumb things. But it’s brat. You’re brat. That’s brat.”
