Ugandan Athlete Dies After Being Set on Fire by Ex-Boyfriend

Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei passed away on Thursday, Sep. 5, days after being set on fire by her ex-boyfriend.

The attack was carried out on Sunday, Sep. 1; the marathon runner was doused in petrol and set on fire, which led her to suffer from extensive burns. 

Authorities in north-west Kenya, where the Cheptegei lived and trained, revealed that the marathon runner was attacked when she was returning home from church with her two daughters.

A local administrator had filed a report that alleged that the athlete and her ex-partner were having issues over a piece of land. The police have assured that an investigation is underway. 

According to her father, Joseph Cheptegei, Rebecca financially supported her family. The marathon runner had recently participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
