The UAE has made a remarkable leap in the annual UN-sponsored World Happiness Report, securing 21st place globally. This achievement places the UAE ahead of major nations such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, on the International Day of Happiness, which was revealed Thursday.
UAE's Position in the Global Rankings
Notably, the UAE stands as the only Gulf nation in the top-25 rankings, with Kuwait following at 30th and Saudi Arabia in 32nd. Oman ranks 52nd and Bahrain comes in at 59th, showcasing a strong regional presence among the world’s happiest countries.
In comparison to last year’s ranking, the UAE improved from 22nd, while Kuwait dropped from 13th place. Among South Asian countries, Pakistan holds the upper hand at 109th, ahead of India at 118th. Afghanistan ranks lowest in the region at 147th.

Factors Behind Happiness Rankings
The rankings are based on a three-year average of self-assessed life satisfaction, including factors like GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption. These elements were measured through surveys where people rated their overall life satisfaction.
Happiness in the Arab World
Among Arab nations, the report shows a mixed picture. Algeria sits at 84th, while Iraq is ranked 101st, followed by Palestine at 108th, and Morocco at 112th. Other countries like Tunisia (113th), Jordan (128th), Egypt (135th), Yemen (140th), and Lebanon (145th) have lower positions in the global rankings.

The Role of Generosity and Connection
The 2024 report, compiled by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford in partnership with Gallup and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, emphasizes that happiness goes beyond wealth. According to Jon Clifton, CEO of Gallup, “Happiness isn’t just about wealth or growth — it’s about trust, connection and knowing people have your back.” Clifton also highlighted the importance of investing in strong relationships to foster thriving communities and economies.
The report also reveals that acts of generosity and believing in the kindness of others are more significant predictors of happiness than financial success.
Finland Continues to Lead the Way
Finland continues its reign as the world's happiest country, marking its eighth consecutive year in the top spot. Experts point to Finland’s serene lakes and robust welfare system as key factors contributing to the country’s top ranking. Meanwhile, the US saw a decline, dropping to 24th place, its lowest-ever position, partly attributed to an increase in people dining alone.
The Nordic Edge and Global Shifts
The UK and Germany ranked 23rd and 22nd, just below the UAE. Nordic countries, including Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden, maintain their positions in the top 10, with Finland slightly extending its lead over Denmark.
This year’s World Happiness Report underscores that a country’s happiness level is deeply influenced by social support, generosity, and meaningful human connections, illustrating the UAE’s commitment to these values as it climbs the global ranks.
