PM Flees Home & Internet Shutdown as Bangladesh Riots Worsen

Bangladesh is experiencing its most significant unrest in 20 years under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with over 300 deaths amid ongoing protests. The 76-year-old Hasina has fled her official residence, Ganabhaban, which was stormed by protesters.

The protests, sparked by a controversial quota system reserving 30 percent of government jobs for veterans' families, escalated when student activists clashed with police at Dhaka University. Critics argue the system favors supporters of Hasina's Awami League party and advocate for a merit-based system.

The unrest has evolved into a broader anti-government movement, drawing support from various societal sectors, including celebrities and garment manufacturers. Hasina faces accusations of entrenching power and suppressing dissent, with recent violence highlighting public dissatisfaction.

In response to the protests, the government declared an indefinite nationwide curfew, a three-day general holiday, and shut down internet services. Demonstrators have blocked highways and attacked government buildings, resulting in widespread clashes and casualties.

The international community, including India, has advised against traveling to Bangladesh amid the chaos.
