Maldives Bans Israeli Passport Holders From Entry

Maldives bans Israeli passport holders from entering the country, citing their support for Palestinians during the ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza.

The country's president, Mohamed Muizzu, signed the measure into law on Tuesday, Apr. 15, following the approval of the proposal in parliament.

The amended Immigration Act blocks entry to all Israel passport holders; although, individuals with dual nationalities can travel to the country with non-Israeli documents.

This amendment came after a Cabinet proposal from 2024 and has been implemented after increasing domestic pressure for the government to show a strong stance against Israel.

The Maldivian president also shared plans to appoint a special envoy to evaluate and provide much-needed humanitarian services in Palestinian territories.

He also plans to launch a national fundraising campaign called “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine.”

The Maldives lifted the ban on Israeli tourists in the 1990s and briefly explored normalizing ties with Israel in 2010, but their diplomatic efforts were halted in 2012.
