Kerala Landslides Claim 108 Lives, 3,000 Evacuated

Southern India’s Kerala state has been hit by a severe natural disaster, as landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have resulted in at least 108 deaths. The landslides occurred early Tuesday morning, impacting tea estates and villages in the Wayanad district, a popular tourist spot in Kerala.

Tragic Outcome

The landslides struck after a night of torrential rain, causing hillsides to collapse and unleashing torrents of mud and boulders. Most of the victims were tea estate workers and their families living in small, makeshift homes. Television reports showed rescue workers navigating through debris and rushing to aid those trapped in the wreckage.

Authorities report 106 confirmed deaths, with 128 injured and many still missing. Local news suggests the toll could be higher, with some reports indicating up to 119 fatalities. This disaster marks the worst in Kerala since the 2018 floods, which also caused significant loss of life.

Rescue and Relief Efforts

Rescue operations are ongoing with over 3,000 people evacuated to 45 relief camps. The Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, stated that rescue teams, including army personnel and volunteers with drones and sniffer dogs, are working tirelessly to find survivors. A military helicopter has reached Mundakkai, a severely affected area, to deliver essential supplies and evacuate those stranded.

Efforts are also underway to replace a destroyed bridge linking the affected areas to Chooralmala. The region’s tourism activities have been suspended since Monday due to the ongoing weather conditions, with local residents bearing the brunt of the disaster.

Government Response

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised support from the central government. He announced compensation of Rs200,000 for the families of the deceased and Rs50,000 for the injured. For emergency health services, affected individuals can contact local helplines.
