Dubai to Phase Out Traditional Buses in Four Key Districts

Dubai will phase out traditional buses and replace them with electric ones in four city areas, aiming for an eco-friendly public transport system by 2050.

Electric Buses to Hit Dubai Roads

Dubai is set to replace traditional buses with electric ones in four key areas, according to Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of the Roads and Transport Authority's Public Transport Agency. A total of 40 electric buses will be added to RTA's fleet as part of this initiative.

Initial Routes for Electric Buses

The new electric buses will initially operate on routes in Business Bay, Al Ghubaiba, Al Satwa, and Al Jafiliya. These routes were selected for their suitability for electric bus operation, with the necessary charging infrastructure already in place.

Advanced Features and Passenger Benefits

The new electric buses will come equipped with the Raqeeb Driver Behaviour Monitoring System to improve driver conduct and an automated passenger counting system to reduce fare evasion. Despite the higher cost of electric buses compared to traditional diesel ones, passenger fares will remain unchanged.

Capacity and Performance

Electric buses will have similar passenger capacities to diesel buses, with standard single-deck buses accommodating 35 seated passengers or up to 70 passengers with standing space. The range of these buses will depend on their battery capacity and type.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

The introduction of electric buses is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, by approximately 3,900 tonnes per year. Bahrozyan emphasized that these buses have no direct negative impact on the environment and are suitable for Dubai's extreme summer heat, based on several successful trials.

Future Plans

Dubai aims to transform its entire bus fleet to electric by 2050 as part of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy. Traditional buses will be recycled in line with RTA's sustainability and eco-friendly standards.
