Dubai Seizes 26,000 Boxes of Illegal Eye Drop Medication

Dubai Customs has recently intercepted a series of smuggling attempts involving a restricted eye drop medication, which has been transported by travelers from Asia. The drug, known for its narcotic properties, is classified as a controlled substance in the UAE. As such, it is strictly prohibited for sale or use without a medical prescription.

Over the past two years, Dubai Customs inspectors have seized an impressive 26,766 boxes of this medication across 62 separate operations. These seizures reflect the ongoing efforts of Dubai Customs to prevent the illegal entry of controlled substances into the country.

The UAE upholds a rigorous stance on narcotic substances, which is outlined in Federal Decree Law No. 30 of 2021. This legislation enforces a ban on the import, export, manufacturing, possession, and use of narcotics and psychotropic substances. Any activities involving these substances are subject to strict regulatory oversight to protect public health and safety.

A spokesperson from the Dubai Customs Department stated, “Protecting our society, its people, and the economy from the dangers of narcotics and other controlled substances is a top priority for Dubai Customs.” In addition to the eye drop seizures, Dubai Customs recently disrupted a criminal scheme involving marijuana smuggling. Travelers from the same Asian region had attempted to conceal the drug in vacuum-sealed bags, resulting in 13 foiled attempts that collectively involved 54kg of marijuana.

The spokesperson continued, “Today, we report the seizure of 26,766 boxes of controlled medication over a two-year period. This medication is often misused and can have narcotic-like effects on those who consume it without medical supervision.”

Dubai Customs’ continuous vigilance plays a crucial role in safeguarding public health and ensuring the safety of the UAE’s borders against illicit substances. Through its ongoing operations, the department reaffirms its commitment to protecting the wellbeing of the community.
