Social Media Day: Differences Between Snapchat and Instagram

Social media has a strong dominance to some extent that we depend much on them in most of our life functions. The most dominating social media platforms are Snapchat and Instagram, as they are used a lot by people today, especially the youth, celebrities, and influencers.

Some people would say that in the meantime they share many similarities more than their differences. Well, you think you are right until you read this article, but first, you have to get an insight into both of the platforms:

Snapchat

Is a platform that allows you to take pictures and videos, add texts and send them to selected people or to your story, which everyone can see it. The maximum time to view the visuals is 10 seconds. Snapchat recently added infinity time. Visuals can be posted with a fun twist by using the filters that Snapchat has among other platforms. Snapchat recently added a feature that allows you to add pictures and videos from the memories that are found on your mobile.

Instagram

Is a platform that allows you to take pictures and videos, add descriptions and post them to your followers. In the case of a public profile, it is seen by everyone who views the profile or a used hashtag in the description. Instagram allows you to use some features like filters (geo-filter, countdown, etc.) and photo editing options (frame, brightness, etc). Instagram recently added the story feature like the one on Snapchat.

Differences and Similarities:

  1. Published content: Both of them are visual-sharing apps, but the way of sharing is different. One of the weirdest things Snapchat has among other platforms is the “capture the moment” feature. This means that stories are captured at the moment and remain on Snapchat for 24 hours only! Instagram posts on the other hand stay on your feed and profile unless you delete them.

  2. Fun twist: Snapchat stories can be funny and appealing, as you can add filters that change voices, swap faces or even change your face’s features! Although Instagram has fun features, but they are not as those of Snapchat.

  3. Engagement rate: On Snapchat, you are the only one to know who saw your story, replied to it so you can replay back. On Instagram however, likes and comments can be seen by everyone and people can get engaged in the discussion.
  4. Stories: Although the stories feature was done first by Snapchat, Instagram copied it later and made it something people on Instagram depend on most of the time. On Snapchat, stories are placed in a vertical order, so you have to open the first one you want to watch and start swiping left to watch the rest. It is good that it is not auto-played, so you can watch what you only want. On Instagram, the stories appeared horizontally at the top of the screen, which makes you curious to know what is there before scrolling down to the feed. A downside however is that they are auto-played, which might embraces you that you don’t want to see someone’s story.
  5. Direct messages: On Snapchat, if you close the conversation by mistake or quit the app, the message directly disappears. On Instagram, the message remains there as you can get back to it. Instagram messages are more or less like those on Facebook.
