Abu Dhabi Just Launched Environmentally Friendly Buses

In an exciting step towards a greener future, the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport has rolled out its innovative Green Bus service today. Powered by clean hydrogen and electric energy, these cutting-edge buses mark a major milestone in Abu Dhabi's Green Bus Programme, which aims to turn Abu Dhabi Island into a public transport green zone by 2030.

What's New?

The new Green Bus service will run on Route 65, connecting Marina Mall and Shams Boutik on Al Reem Island. This service represents a significant leap in Abu Dhabi Mobility’s mission to enhance public transport with eco-friendly technologies.

The Green Bus Programme

Launched in November 2023, the Green Bus Programme is a comprehensive initiative designed to assess and manage public transport buses in Abu Dhabi. Its goal is to identify and implement the most effective hydrogen and electric technologies, providing cleaner transport options for residents, visitors, and commuters.

The programme involves collaboration with international government bodies and bus manufacturers, ensuring that the solutions are well-suited to Abu Dhabi’s local environment. It also focuses on developing Emirati skills through specialized training in hydrogen and electric buses, including hands-on opportunities in South Korea and China.

Training and Development

Over the next two years, the Green Bus Programme will run until June 2025. During this period, bus operators, drivers, and certified technicians will undergo both theoretical and practical training. This training is essential for maintaining the new green fleet and ensuring it operates efficiently.

Environmental Impact

One of the key objectives of the Green Bus Programme is to cut down carbon dioxide emissions. With the transition from diesel to renewable energy, Abu Dhabi expects to reduce its annual CO2 emissions by over 100,000 metric tonnes. This significant reduction supports Abu Dhabi’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Collaboration and Future Goals

The Green Bus Programme is a prime example of successful public-private sector collaboration. Abu Dhabi Mobility is working closely with local and international stakeholders, including government bodies and industry leaders, to implement this green initiative effectively.

Looking ahead, the programme will set new standards for green buses that meet both the climate and operational needs of the emirate. This initiative not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also aligns with Abu Dhabi's broader sustainability goals.

In summary, the launch of the Green Bus service is a pivotal step towards a more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi. With advanced technology and strategic planning, Abu Dhabi is on track to create a greener, more eco-friendly public transport system.
