Abu Dhabi is stepping up its efforts to keep the city clean and green with new, stricter penalties for littering. On Tuesday, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) announced updated fines for violations, including hefty penalties for repeat offenders.
The announcement was made via Instagram, detailing how fines will vary based on the type of violation and how often it occurs. The revised penalties include a maximum fine of AED 4,000 for repeated offenses, signaling a strong stance against public littering.
During the UAE's 53rd National Day celebrations in 2024, Abu Dhabi Police issued 670 fines to individuals for littering and using spray paint on roads. These violations involved drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement.
New Littering Fines in Abu Dhabi
The updated fines fall under the Regulation on the Preservation of Public Spaces, covering a range of littering behaviors:
Discarding cigarette butts outside designated containers:
- First violation: AED 500
- Second violation: AED 1,000
- Third violation: AED 2,000
Disposing of personal waste from eating and drinking outside designated containers:
- First violation: AED 500
- Second violation: AED 1,000
- Third violation: AED 2,000
Disposing of or leaving waste in non-designated areas:
- First violation: AED1,000
- Second violation: AED 2,000
- Third violation: AED 4,000
