WhatsApp to Stop Working on These Devices Starting May 2025

WhatsApp will stop working on iPhones running iOS versions older than 15.1 starting May 5, 2025, impacting devices like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. This change is part of the app's move to stay compatible with modern mobile technology and ensure optimal performance.

Affected Devices and What It Means

Currently, WhatsApp supports iPhones running iOS 12 and above. With the new update, devices unable to upgrade to iOS 15.1 or later will lose access to the app. This includes older models like:

- iPhone 5s

- iPhone 6

- iPhone 6 Plus

If your iPhone supports iOS 15.1 or newer, updating your operating system will allow continued use of WhatsApp. Users are advised to update their phones by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update.

Why is WhatsApp Dropping Support for Older Devices?

The company explains that dropping support for outdated systems allows it to focus on the latest advancements in mobile technology. Older devices often lack the security updates and features needed to run the app smoothly.

“Every year, we evaluate which devices and software are the least used and least compatible with our app,” WhatsApp stated on its website.

Android users won’t be affected by this change, as WhatsApp will continue to support devices running Android 5.0 or newer.

What Happens If Your iPhone is Affected?

If your iPhone is on the list of unsupported devices, you have two options:

1. Upgrade to a newer iPhone model.

2. Update your device to iOS 15.1 (if supported).

WhatsApp will notify users on affected devices and send multiple reminders to upgrade before the May 2025 deadline.

Stay Updated for the Best Experience

For uninterrupted access to WhatsApp, iPhone users should regularly update their software to the latest version available. The platform also advises against using jailbroken or modified iPhones, as these versions are not supported.

By focusing on newer operating systems, WhatsApp aims to provide a better, more secure experience for its users while keeping up with the latest features in technology.
