What is Eid Prayer

Eid Prayer (Salat al-Eid) is a special Islamic prayer performed by Muslims to mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr (celebrated at the end of Ramadan) and Eid al-Adha (celebrated during the Hajj season). It is a communal act of worship that brings Muslims together in gratitude, celebration, and remembrance of Allah.

🕌 Key Facts about Eid Prayer

🕊️ 1. Timing

  • Eid al-Fitr Prayer is performed shortly after sunrise on the 1st of Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends.

  • Eid al-Adha Prayer is performed on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah (the day of Eid al-Adha).

🙌 2. Format of the Prayer

  • It consists of 2 Rak'ahs (units) of prayer.

  • It includes extra Takbeers (saying “Allahu Akbar”)—usually 7 in the first rak'ah and 5 in the second rak'ah, depending on the school of thought.

  • After the prayer, the Imam delivers a sermon (Khutbah), unlike Friday prayer where the sermon comes before the prayer.

📍 3. Location

  • Typically held in large open areas like parks, sports fields, or mosques to accommodate as many people as possible.

📿 4. Who Should Attend?

  • It is highly recommended (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) for all Muslims—men, women, and even children.

  • Some scholars consider it obligatory (Wajib) for men.

🌙 Eid Prayer Etiquette

  • Perform Ghusl (ritual bath) before going.

  • Wear your best (modest) clothes, ideally something new or clean.

  • Apply perfume (for men).

  • Eat something before Eid al-Fitr Prayer (often dates), but not before Eid al-Adha Prayer.

  • Say Takbeer (Allahu Akbar...) on the way to prayer.

  • Walk to the prayer area, if possible.

  • Take a different route back home after the prayer (as practiced by the Prophet ﷺ).

💬 Takbeer for Eid

Muslims often recite the following loudly before and after Eid prayer:

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil hamd.
"God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah, God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, and all praise is for Allah."
