The UAE has announced that all Muslims in the country are urged to sight the crescent moon on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025. This announcement came from the Emirates Fatwa Council, which made the call on Wednesday.
The date marks 29 Shaban in the Umm Al Qura calendar, a system used in the UAE to determine Islamic months and dates. Islamic months, based on the Hijri calendar, last either 29 or 30 days, which means the sighting of the crescent moon on February 28 will help determine the beginning of Ramadan.
The UAE's Ramadan Crescent Sighting Committee, which operates under the Emirates Fatwa Council, encourages anyone who observes the crescent moon to report it. You can reach the committee at 027774647 or through this link: Report Crescent Sighting.
If the crescent is sighted after the Maghrib prayer on Friday evening, Ramadan will start on March 1. If the moon isn't spotted, the holy month will begin on March 2. The UAE’s International Astronomy Centre has stated that Ramadan is most likely to begin on March 1.
As Ramadan approaches, the UAE government has also set working hours for government employees, while the private sector will see a reduction of two hours per day during the month. This follows a similar call made by Saudi Arabia, urging Muslims in the Kingdom to sight the crescent moon on the same evening.
