UAE Stands with Morocco in Wake of Deadly Floods

The United Arab Emirates has conveyed its heartfelt condolences and support to the Kingdom of Morocco following devastating floods that have impacted the southern regions of the country. Heavy rainfall caused widespread destruction, leading to tragic deaths, numerous injuries, and significant property damage.

In a statement, the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) expressed deep sympathy to the Moroccan government, the people of Morocco, and the families affected by the floods. The ministry also extended its wishes for a swift recovery for those injured during the natural disaster.

Unprecedented Rainfall in Morocco

Moroccan officials reported that the storms, which lasted for two days, brought levels of rain far exceeding historical averages. In some areas, the downpours surpassed the annual rainfall totals. These floods hit regions that had already experienced the devastating effects of a deadly earthquake just one year ago.

Meteorologists had predicted a rare weather event in North Africa’s Sahara Desert, where rainfall is usually scarce, with many areas receiving less than an inch of rain annually.

Impact of the Floods

The floods claimed the lives of 18 people in rural areas, which have long struggled with inadequate infrastructure. Additionally, 56 homes were reported to have collapsed, and nine individuals remain missing. The storms also caused damage to essential infrastructure, including drinking water supplies, electrical networks, and major roads, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the affected regions.

The UAE's message of solidarity underscores the strong ties between the two nations as Morocco begins recovery efforts in the wake of this tragic disaster.
