UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, have joined other world leaders in sending their condolences to Morocco, after a deadly earthquake in the High Atlas Mountains killed at least 2,012 people and injured more than 2,059 people.

The President said in a message posted on Twitter: "I extend my deepest condolences to my brother King Mohammed VI and the people of Morocco over the devastating earthquake that struck the country."

Sheikh Mohamed also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid wrote on Twitter: "We ask God to inspire them with patience and solace, to be kind to them, and to maintain safety and security for them."

About 50 miles from the Moroccan capital of Marrakesh, a strong earthquake struck late on Friday.

As per the preliminary report from the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and a depth of around 11 miles.

Several people remained outside out of fear of aftershocks, and Moroccan media showed footage from the aftermath.

Families in distress stood in the streets or crowded on the pavement, some of them with children, blankets, or other items.
