UAE Pardons 220 Filipinos Following Marcos’ Diplomatic Visit

In honor of the United Arab Emirates' 53rd National Day, 220 Filipinos detained in the UAE have been granted pardons. This gesture, announced on December 26, 2024, underscores the enduring relationship between the two nations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) revealed recently that the pardon followed diplomatic discussions between Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a meeting in November.

Swift Action for Repatriation

The DFA, in coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi, is now processing the necessary documents to ensure the quick return of the pardoned individuals to the Philippines.

A Tradition of Clemency

The UAE regularly grants pardons on significant occasions, including its National Day on December 2. Earlier in 2024, 143 Filipinos were also pardoned during Eid al-Adha celebrations.
