UAE Launches Its First SAR Satellite

The UAE has successfully launched its first-ever Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite into Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), marking a groundbreaking achievement in the nation's space endeavors.

This advanced satellite, designed to enhance Earth observation capabilities, was launched on Friday, thanks to a collaboration between Bayanat AI PLC, Al Yah Satellite Communications Company PJSC (Yahsat), and ICEYE, a leader in SAR satellite technology.

The Bayanat-owned satellite, in partnership with Yahsat, was launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter 11 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The mission represents a significant leap forward for the UAE's space sector, as the SAR satellite has already established communication and begun routine operations.

This launch is part of the UAE’s Earth Observation Space Program, which aims to develop a comprehensive SAR satellite constellation. Unlike traditional optical satellites, SAR technology can capture high-resolution images both day and night, regardless of weather conditions. This capability offers unparalleled monitoring solutions, making it a valuable asset for applications such as disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility.

The SAR satellite's advanced radar antenna covers extensive geographical areas while providing high-resolution images, positioning the UAE at the forefront of global SpaceTech innovation. The satellite’s capabilities align with the UAE's National Space Strategy 2030, underscoring the nation's commitment to advancing its space sector and fostering local talent.

Hasan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat, described the launch as a pivotal moment for the company and the UAE. "The debut of our SAR satellite constellation is a defining step towards our future as Space42. This launch strengthens our position as a leader in AI-powered geospatial analytics, enabling us to leverage space insights for informed decision-making on Earth," he stated.

The collaboration between Bayanat, Yahsat, and ICEYE began in 2023 with the creation of the Earth Observation Space Program. This initiative aims to build a national SAR satellite constellation, providing continuous data streams for a wide range of applications. The program leverages Yahsat's upstream and midstream capabilities, along with Bayanat's downstream expertise, to deliver timely and accurate geospatial insights across the Middle East and beyond.
