Catholic communities across the UAE are set to hold special masses this week to pay tribute to the late Pope Francis, following a call by Bishop Paolo Martinelli, the Apostolic Vicar of Southern Arabia.

In a message shared with all parishes under his care, Bishop Martinelli invited “all people of God to participate in the mass for our beloved Pope Francis in their respective parishes.” The move comes as a heartfelt gesture of solidarity and remembrance for a spiritual leader whose influence reached far beyond the Vatican.

The UAE, known for its commitment to religious tolerance and interfaith harmony, had a special connection with Pope Francis. His historic visit to Abu Dhabi in 2019 marked a turning point in Muslim-Christian relations in the region, and his message of coexistence continues to resonate.

Joining the global outpouring of grief and gratitude, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, shared his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis... His legacy of humility and interfaith unity will continue to inspire many communities around the world."

The Dubai ruler also posted poignant images from the Pope’s 2019 UAE visit, a moment that many still remember as a symbol of hope and bridge-building between faiths.
