The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iran Join BRICS

BRICS is an acronym for a group of five world economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iran Join BRICS

The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iran have been invited to become members of the BRICS, a group of key emerging markets including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. 

The expansion is the first in more than a decade. Other than these countries, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Argentina have also been invited. 

In a video message, Russian President Vladimir Putin said "I would like to congratulate the new members who will work in a full-scale format next year...we will continue the work that we started today on expanding the influence of BRICS in the world."

President of the UAE Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed said on X "We respect the vision of the BRICS leadership and appreciate the inclusion of the UAE as a member of this important group. We look forward to a continued commitment of cooperation for the prosperity, dignity and benefit of all nations and people around the world."

The Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy said on the occasion "We are pleased to join the BRICS group, which the UAE recognises as a mechanism to promote global peace, stability, and prosperity."

The new memberships will take effect from Jan. 1, 2024.
