Science Proves Dubai Sunsets Are Among the Best Globally

It’s official—Dubai is one of the best places in the world to catch a breathtaking sunset. A recent study has confirmed what many of us already knew: Dubai’s sunsets are some of the most spectacular on the planet.

The study, conducted by travel insurance specialists AllClear, analyzed meteorological data and social media popularity to determine the world’s top sunset locations. The Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Desert both made it into the top 15, placing Dubai among the global sunset hotspots.

The Data Behind Dubai’s Stunning Sunsets

To come up with the rankings, researchers looked at 100 popular dusk destinations worldwide. Key factors like cloud cover, wind, humidity, and rainfall were taken into account, alongside how often each location’s sunsets were shared on Instagram. This data was then used to create a “sunset score” for each location, with Dubai’s Burj Khalifa securing 12th place and the Dubai Desert coming in at 15th.

• Burj Khalifa: Ranked #12 with a score of 68.5, nestled between Bali’s Uluwatu and Paris’ Trocadéro Gardens.
• Dubai Desert: Ranked #15 with a score of 65.0, just below Milan’s Duomo and Positano on the Amalfi Coast.
• The top spot was claimed by the UNESCO World Heritage site, Cappadoccia in Turkey, which scored 86.1.

Interestingly, these two Dubai locations were the only ones from the GCC to land in the top 25, making Dubai a true gem for sunset lovers.

Why Dubai’s Sunsets Are So Beautiful

Sunset colors, from rich reds to golden yellows, are created by a phenomenon known as scattering. As sunlight passes through the atmosphere, it encounters molecules and particles that change the direction of the light rays, causing the beautiful hues we see.

During the day, sunlight travels through a smaller part of the atmosphere, resulting in less scattering. But as the sun sets, the light travels through more of the atmosphere, leading to extra scattering and those vivid sunset colors.

In locations like Dubai, the absence of precipitation and low rainfall help ensure clear skies and perfect visibility, which contribute to the stunning sunsets. Moderate humidity also plays a role in scattering light effectively. Calm to moderate wind speeds are also beneficial, providing clarity in the atmosphere.

Clouds and Sunsets: The Perfect Combination

Interestingly, the study showed that moderate cloud coverage helped create more vivid sunset colors. While Dubai’s iconic blue skies are a sight to behold, they can limit the amount of scattering that occurs. Locations with moderate cloud cover scored higher because clouds help scatter sunlight, enhancing the colors we love to see at dusk.
