Rory McIlroy Clinches DP World Tour Championship

Rory McIlroy, ranked world number three, wrapped up the 2024 season with a win at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on Sunday, claiming his sixth Race to Dubai title.

The 35-year-old Northern Irishman finished two strokes ahead of Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard, closing the final round with a 69 to sit 15 under par at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

McIlroy’s victory places him alongside Seve Ballesteros with six European Tour season titles, matching the late golf icon's achievement. Scotland's Colin Montgomerie still holds the top spot with eight wins.

Reflecting on the milestone, an emotional McIlroy said, “It’s really cool; Seve means so much to European golf and Ryder Cup players. To be mentioned in the same breath is something I’m very proud of.”

Despite a tense start, McIlroy found momentum with four straight birdies, overcoming an early bogey on the opening hole. The back nine saw competition heat up, with Hojgaard drawing level after McIlroy bogeyed the 13th. However, McIlroy rallied in the final stretch to secure victory. Hojgaard ultimately ranked third in the Race to Dubai standings.

Shane Lowry’s impressive four-under round earned him a shared third place with Antoine Rozner and Adam Scott.

This win caps a stellar year for McIlroy, who previously won the Dubai Desert Classic, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (with Lowry), and the Wells Fargo Championship. He narrowly missed the U.S. Open title in June, finishing just one stroke behind Bryson DeChambeau.

“2024 has been a year full of highs and challenges, both professionally and personally,” McIlroy noted. “Ending it like this feels right. Perseverance paid off, and I’m proud to have hung on and finished strong.”
