Ramadan Recipe: Potato Gratin

Potato Gratin is a rich and creamy dish perfect for Ramadan gatherings. Layers of thinly sliced potatoes are baked in a velvety garlic-infused cream and topped with melted cheese, creating a comforting and indulgent appetizer. Whether served as a side or a starter, this flavorful dish is sure to be a favorite at your iftar table.

  • Ingredients of Potato Gratin

Potatoes au Gratin

1 ½ cups cream
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tbsp (30 grams) unsalted butter, melted
9 medium potatoes (about 1.25 kilograms)
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
2 ½ cups grated cheese (Gruyere, Colby, Cheddar, or Havarti)
2 tsp thyme leaves

  1. Prepare the Cream Mixture

    In a large measuring cup, mix butter, cream, and garlic until well combined.
  2. Preheat the Oven

    Set your oven to 180°C (350°F) and allow it to preheat.
  3. Slice the Potatoes

    Peel the potatoes and slice them into 3 mm (⅛ inch) thick rounds. A slicer or a mandoline can make this step easier.
  4. Prepare the First Layer

    Spread ⅓ of the potatoes in a baking dish. Pour over ⅓ of the cream mixture, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and thyme, and top with ¾ cup of cheese.
  5. Second and Third Layers

    Repeat the process for the next two layers, but without adding cheese to the top layer yet.
  6. Bake Covered

    Cover the dish with a piece of aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Check by inserting a knife into the potatoes. If needed, bake for another 15 minutes.
  7. Add Cheese and Bake Again

    When the potatoes are cooked through, remove the foil, sprinkle more cheese on top, and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  8. Rest and Serve

    Allow your dish to rest for 5 minutes before serving and enjoy your creamy, cheesy baked potatoes!
