New AED315 Million Abu Dhabi Bridges to Cut Traffic by 80%

Abu Dhabi has just taken a major step towards enhancing its road network with the opening of two new bridges that link Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street to Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street, heading towards Musaffah. This strategic infrastructure project, completed by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), is set to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce delays, and support the city’s growing transportation needs.

Reducing Traffic Delays by Up to 80%

The new bridges aim to reduce average delays by as much as 80% during peak morning hours, providing a smoother, more efficient commute for thousands of drivers. With the capacity to accommodate 7,500 vehicles per hour, these upgrades will ensure that Abu Dhabi’s busiest routes remain clear, even during rush hour. The project’s total cost of AED315 million reflects its importance to the city's long-term infrastructure development.

Project Details and Features

The new infrastructure includes a three-lane flyover bridge on Khaleej Al Arabi Street and a two-lane bridge linking Shakhbout Bin Sultan Street to Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street. Additionally, the project features dedicated cycle and pedestrian paths to encourage sustainable transportation options and ensure the safety of all road users.

  • Bridge Specifications:
    • Five lanes across the two bridges
    • Total length: 742 meters
    • Surface area: 10,242m²
    • 61 streetlights for enhanced visibility
    • 990 meters of ramps supported by 12 piers
    • 46,000m² of upgraded street landscaping

In total, 15,354m³ of concrete was used in the construction of these new bridges, ensuring a durable and long-lasting infrastructure solution for the city. The project was completed with over 3 million safe man-hours and achieved a major safety milestone by finishing the entire build with no lost time incidents (LTI).

Strategic Collaboration for Seamless Connectivity

This project is the result of a strategic collaboration between the DMT and its affiliate, the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility). Together, they have successfully created a more connected road network for commuters traveling to key destinations such as Zayed International Airport, Mussafah, and Hudayriyat Island.

According to His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of DMT, this new infrastructure is just the beginning of Abu Dhabi’s plans to enhance its road network. "DMT’s mission is to create a seamless, connected, and livable city while alleviating congestion, cutting journey times, and improving transport safety," he said.

Future-Proofing Abu Dhabi's Infrastructure

The new bridges are designed to support future growth. The project incorporates provisions for an underpass development, ensuring that the infrastructure will continue to meet the city’s evolving transportation needs. The upgrades will not only improve traffic flow but will also enhance the quality of life for residents, visitors, and commuters alike.

As Abu Dhabi continues to experience rapid economic growth, the DMT is committed to delivering transformative infrastructure projects that accommodate the needs of a growing population. The city’s road network will remain a key focus, with further projects planned for the near future to ensure a smooth, sustainable urban environment.

A Better Future for Commuters

With the new bridges now open, commuters can expect smoother, faster journeys. During peak hours, average delays are expected to drop to just 20 seconds. This is a significant improvement in a city where traffic congestion has been a major concern. Thanks to this critical upgrade, Abu Dhabi is one step closer to achieving its goal of a connected, modern city.

This project marks another milestone in Abu Dhabi’s ongoing transformation into a smart city with world-class infrastructure. With future developments in the pipeline, the city is well on its way to providing the best possible experience for everyone who travels through it.
