In 19th century America, popcorn was a popular treat among the people. However, it was not until 1885, when Charles Cretors—a candy-store owner in Chicago—invented the popcorn machine. By the 1900s, Cretors had a horse-drawn popcorn machine wheeled in the streets of Chicago.

Although this invention made the snack very popular, it was not until Louise Ruckheim created Cracker Jack that popcorn became a national snack. Cracker Jack contains peanuts, molasses, and popcorn. In 1908, the national anthem for baseball was released, which made Cracker Jack a must-have snack at baseball games in America. Despite its popularity with Americans, popcorn had not become a staple snack to take to the movies, yet this was about to change. In 1938, Glen W. Dickson installed popcorn machines in his movie theatres and soon other theatre owners followed, which made popcorn an important part of the theatre-going experience. Popcorn was still not a choice for an everyday snack, however, that changed in 1981, when the General Mills patent for microwave popcorn bags was accepted, which made popcorn the easy and quick snack that everyone loves.
