Captain Salma Al Baloushi is the first Emirati female to rise to First Officer’s rank at Etihad Airways. She talks about her success, life, and vision.
- What sparked your passion for aviation?
When I read about the Etihad Airways Cadet Pilot Program I wondered if there were any women pilots in UAE and immediately clicked in my mind reading news about the first Emirati Female Pilot Captain Aysha Alhamli and I said to myself I want to be just like her.
- How did you overcome the mental obstacles?
Whenever I thought of Aviation it always came to mind that it is a male-dominated world and I have to prove myself but I was so lucky to be surrounded by very good colleagues (male) who told me to focus on improving my skills and not on what they're saying.
- How do you feel when you’re flying?
My flights always used to be my happy hours where I can be happiest and just embrace the blessings of God.
- How do you approach challenges?
I always try to seek answers and build my knowledge so I can find a way to deal with challenges and come out of it with valuable lessons.
- What’s the bravest step you’ve taken?
To change my career, from nursing to a pilot to an aircraft accident investigator.
- How did you feel the first time you flew?
My first flight was on my birthday and it was the best gift ever. I took it as a sign from God that I'm meant to be a pilot.
- Has flying changed your perception of life on land?
Of course by exploring different natural phenomena such as Northern lights and seeing the beauty of different land marks.
