As Ramadan unfolds in the UAE, many professionals are adjusting to new work routines while fasting from dawn to sunset. While the initial days of fasting can lead to lower energy levels and reduced concentration, experts say most individuals adapt quickly, improving their efficiency over time.
Dr. Hala Abdulkareem, Consultant Family Medicine at Burjeel Medical City, explained that fasting may temporarily impact cognitive functions, such as memory and attention span, due to lower blood glucose levels. However, research shows that many individuals experience improved focus, discipline, and mental clarity once their bodies adjust.
Timing is Key: Work Smarter, Not Harder
Doctors recommend tackling complex tasks in the morning when energy levels are at their highest. "Leverage peak energy levels in the morning for high-priority work," advised Dr. Saima Khan, Specialist Family Medicine at Prime Medical Centre, Jumeirah. She also stressed the importance of short breaks to maintain focus and prevent fatigue.
To sustain energy throughout the day, Dr. Khan suggests eating nutrient-rich suhoor and iftar meals, staying hydrated, and prioritizing quality sleep. "Deep breathing and stretching can help improve concentration," she added.
Employer Support Can Make a Difference
Flexible work hours, remote work options, and access to stress management resources can help employees stay productive during Ramadan. "Shifting perceptions from time-based to outcome-based approach, avoiding distractions and prioritising rest and sleep are known to help to maintain focus," said Dr. Raga Sandhya Gandi, Specialist Psychiatry at Zulekha Hospital Dubai.
Experts also advise coffee drinkers to gradually reduce caffeine intake before Ramadan to prevent withdrawal symptoms and maintain steady energy levels.
By adopting smart strategies and embracing the spirit of self-discipline, professionals can balance fasting with work while staying focused and efficient throughout Ramadan.
