Jimmy Carter: Former U.S. President Passes Away at 100

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away at his Plains, Georgia home on Sunday. The centenarian leader leaves behind a legacy of diplomacy, humanitarian achievements, and a commitment to global peace.

Carter’s son, Chip Carter, described his father as a hero who championed love, human rights, and unity.

The Carter Center announced plans for public observances in Atlanta and Washington, followed by a private interment in Carter’s hometown. Arrangements for a state funeral are underway.

A Presidency Marked by Highs and Lows

Carter’s tenure as president (1977–1981) was highlighted by the historic Camp David Accords, brokering peace between Egypt and Israel. However, domestic challenges such as an economic downturn and the Iran hostage crisis marred his administration, culminating in his loss to Ronald Reagan in the 1980 election.

A Post-Presidency Legacy That Shined

Post-White House, Carter emerged as a global icon for human rights and humanitarian work. From leading election monitoring missions to mediating international conflicts, his efforts earned him the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. The Carter Center, founded by Carter and his wife Rosalynn, became a beacon of advocacy for democracy, health, and social justice.

A Personal Life Rooted in Faith and Service

Born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter rose from a peanut farmer to a naval officer and then a politician. A devout Southern Baptist, his moral compass deeply influenced his approach to governance and service.

He is survived by his three sons and daughter. His beloved wife Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023, shared over 77 years of marriage with him—a union Carter called “the most important thing in my life.”

Unwavering Commitment to Diplomacy

Carter’s foreign policy initiatives reshaped global relations. His leadership facilitated the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty and efforts to normalize U.S.-China relations. Even in retirement, Carter’s diplomacy extended to North Korea, where his interventions eased nuclear tensions and secured the release of imprisoned Americans.

Remembering a Peacemaker and Visionary

While Carter’s presidency faced criticism, his post-presidential accomplishments solidified his place in history. His relentless pursuit of justice, democracy, and peace continues to inspire generations worldwide.
