Interview: Designer Tyler Elis on Collaboration With Emirati Designer

We spoke to Tyler Ellis, the bespoke American handbag designer about her first-ever collaboration within the region, with Emirati couturier Hamda Al Fahim.

The limited-edition capsule collection titled ‘Love and Romance’, highlights a variety of Tyler’s timeless silhouettes combined with Hamda’s intricately embellished textiles in a celebration of the best of design.

1. What inspired you to launch for this collaboration?

I am thrilled to celebrate the collaboration of two women from different cultures joining forces to create special pieces that appeal to a universal audience. We are entrepreneurial designers of the same age, brought up on the opposite sides of the world, Hamda in Abu Dhabi and me in Los Angeles, who built independent, female-owned brands, focusing on craftsmanship, true luxury, and timeless designs.

I instantly fell in love with Hamda’s creations and her hand embroidered fabrics, appreciating the attention to detail and workmanship that goes into each of her designs. The collaboration seemed like a natural fit as both our brands strive to create unique, thoughtful pieces that will stand the test of time.  Every clutch produced is a couture work of art, a rarity in modern society.

2. How would you define the fashion scene in the GCC and how has it evolved over the years?

I am in awe of Middle Eastern women because of their powerful beauty and innate confidence.Flawless from head to toe, these striking yet sophisticated women immediately turn heads upon arrival. Glamor and sophistication define their aura, which is always presented with impeccable poise.

As the world has become more and more casual, I’ve noticed the GCC has adopted the more relaxed vibe, but the sense of underlying elegance remains. Every time I’m in the region I’m inspired to put on a chic cocktail dress, sparkling jewels, and a pair of brand-new high heels!

3. What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?

Make sure you absolutely love what you are about to do.It’s a highly competitive world, and to succeed you need to distinguish yourself from the rest, define and live by your brand DNA and understand that it takes time to build consumer trust in your brand.Success happens slowly over time, while you work to perfect every aspect of your business.Always be thinking about outside of the box ways to push forward.And never forget, you are nothing without your team.As Michael Kors once told me, “Surround yourself with the best people possible.”

4. Tell us more about this collection?

Our limited-edition ‘Love and Romance’ couture clutch capsule collection offers a selection of my timeless silhouettes adorned with Hamda’s intricately embellished textiles. The fabrics used for each piece are entirely embroidered by hand at Hamda’s atelier in Abu Dhabi and then sent directly to our factory in Italy, where the bags are handcrafted to perfection by highly skilled indigenous artisans.Each clutch pairs with a matching gown from Hamda’s collection, creating an elevated look for a glamours night on the town!

5. How do you manage to empower women through the world of fashion?

I am a woman designing for women.  I understand women’s wants and needs and create products accordingly. I want women to feel beautiful and happy when carrying my handbags, but also comfortable…practicality is as important as aesthetics.  A woman should look AND feel great!  Fashion isn’t life changing but it can certainly add positivity to your daily routine. 😊
