GCC Residents to Witness 2025’s 1st Meteor Shower on Friday

Stargazers across the GCC are in for a treat as the Quadrantids Meteor Shower, the first major celestial event of the year, lights up the skies this Friday, January 3, 2025. This event, known for its bright meteors and occasional fireballs, offers an unforgettable way to kick off the New Year.

What to Expect from the Quadrantids

The Quadrantids are unique, producing vibrant blue-tinged meteors as debris from asteroid 2003 EH1 burns up in Earth's atmosphere at over 40 km/s. With up to 120 meteors per hour visible under ideal conditions, it’s one of the most impressive meteor showers of the year.

This shower stands out for its short peak window, lasting only a few hours, making timing crucial for the best views.

Where and When to Watch

The Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG) has organized a special viewing event at Al Qudra Desert on the night of January 3 into the early hours of January 4. The peak viewing time is expected between 12:00 AM and 2:00 AM.

  • Location: Al Qudra Desert, Dubai
  • How to View: Naked eye – no telescopes needed, though DAG will provide telescopes for enthusiasts.
  • Pro Tip: Arrive early and give your eyes 20–30 minutes to adjust to the dark for optimal viewing.

A Historical Connection

The Quadrantids are named after the now-defunct constellation Quadrans Muralis, created in 1795 by French astronomer Jérôme Lalande. While the constellation was removed from the official list in 1922, the meteor shower continues to honor its name, preserving its link to the past.

Don’t Miss It

With the next major meteor event not expected until August 2025, the Quadrantids offer a rare and breathtaking opportunity to witness the beauty of the cosmos. Clear, dark skies are key, so plan your night and head to a low-light area to enjoy this dazzling display.
