Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has rolled out stricter penalties for abandoned and dirty cars left in public spaces, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the city’s aesthetic.
Leaving Your Car Dirty? You Could Be Fined!
Vehicle owners will now face hefty fines if their cars are left in a way that “distorts the general appearance”—including being unwashed for extended periods. The three-tier penalty system is as follows:
- First offence: AED 500 fine
- Second offence: AED 1,000 fine
- Third offence: AED 2,000 fine
Additionally, under Law No. 2 of 2012, motorists who abandon their car’s body or frame in public areas will face even stricter fines:
- First offence: AED 1,000 fine
- Second offence: AED 2,000 fine
- Third offence: AED 4,000 fine
Authorities Are Stepping Up Inspections
Abu Dhabi has launched awareness campaigns and issued warnings in the past, but with the summer season approaching—when many residents travel and leave their cars behind—officials are reinforcing the need for cleanliness and responsible parking.
What About Other Emirates?
Dubai also enforces fines on abandoned vehicles. If a car is left dirty in public parking for an extended period, the owner faces a AED 500 fine. Inspectors place warning stickers on unkempt cars, giving owners 15 days to clean them before they are impounded.
Meanwhile, in 2021, Sharjah Municipality impounded 3,911 abandoned cars in just six months, proving that authorities across the UAE are taking this issue seriously.
🚗💨 Moral of the story? If you’re heading out for summer vacation, make sure your car isn’t collecting dust—or risk a hefty fine!
