Face ID Check-In Coming to Abu Dhabi Hotels — Here's When

Planning a stay in Abu Dhabi? Get ready to smile for the scanner — the UAE capital is launching facial recognition technology across its hotel network to streamline check-ins and boost guest security.

Announced by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the system is already in its pilot phase at select hotels and will gradually expand in two phases. First up: five-star hotels across Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. Next in line? Four-star properties, followed by a full rollout across all hotel categories.

This first-of-its-kind, government-led initiative uses biometric face scans to verify guests upon arrival. The encrypted data is linked with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), and securely transmitted to a centralized DCT-managed database.

According to DCT Abu Dhabi, the goal is to “enhance guest verification processes” and “significantly reduce check-in time.” But it’s not just about speed — the system also promises higher safety standards, streamlined operations, and a fully tech-driven experience for travelers.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to leveraging innovation to enhance the guest experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and security for both guests and hospitality sector employees,” said Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director-General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi.

“By working closely with ICP and our hotel partners and national authorities, we are ensuring a seamless, safer and more connected journey for every visitor.”

Hotels are being supported through technical briefings and training sessions to ensure a smooth onboarding of the new system.

The timing couldn’t be better — Abu Dhabi’s tourism numbers are booming. The city welcomed 1.4 million overnight guests in Q1 of 2025, with strong performance from key markets including India, China, Russia, the UK, and the US. Hotel revenues hit Dh2.3 billion, up 18% from last year, and the emirate maintained a solid 79% occupancy rate, even through Ramadan.

Tourism is expected to bring in Dh62 billion this year and support over 255,000 jobs, further reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s place on the global map. Already ranked the world’s safest city by Numbeo for the ninth year in a row, this next-gen check-in move is a fitting upgrade.

Ready for check-in, but make it sci-fi.
