Dubai Unveils World's First 3D-Printed Abra

Dubai has taken another giant leap in innovation with the introduction of the world’s first 3D-printed abra, a nod to the city’s commitment to merging cutting-edge technology with its rich cultural heritage.

This groundbreaking initiative aligns with the Dubai 3D Printing Strategy 2030, which aims for 25% of Dubai’s buildings to be constructed using 3D printing technology by 2030. But why 3D print an abra? The answer lies in efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The new abra reduces manufacturing time by 90% and cuts costs and maintenance expenses by 30%.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai's RTA, stated that this 3D-printed abra is part of the master plan to enhance marine transport services, adding significant value to Dubai's maritime sector. The abra features a unique monocoque structure, measuring 11 meters in length and 3.1 meters in width, making it the longest of its kind created using 3D printing technology.

During the trial phase, the abra will operate on the TR6 line at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station. Its performance will be closely monitored and compared to the existing 20-passenger fibreglass abras. Despite its modern manufacturing process, the abra retains the traditional charm and can accommodate 20 passengers.

In addition to this innovation, RTA is upgrading traditional abra stations along Dubai Creek. Enhancements focus on safety, security, and compliance with the Dubai Universal Design Code for People of Determination. The upgrades include retail spaces, bike racks, and expanded waiting areas with priority seating.

Completed upgrades at Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station and Deira Old Souq Station set the pace, with improvements to Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station slated for completion by August 2025. These improvements aim to make marine transportation a preferred option for navigating the scenic views of Dubai Creek, Dubai Water Canal, and Dubai beaches.

While the official launch date for the 3D-printed abra is yet to be announced, last year saw the RTA begin trials for the First Autonomous Electric Abra. This captain-less abra supports Dubai’s Strategy for Self-Driving Transport, which aims for 25% of mobility journeys in Dubai to be self-driving by 2030.
