A senior official at Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that ten driverless taxis will be deployed to serve the public in Jumeirah by the end of 2023.

According to the director of Transportation Systems, Public Transport Agency at RTA Khaled Al Awadhi, RTA will deploy more driverless taxis in Jumeirah in 2024 until the gradual deployment of 4,000 taxis in Dubai by 2030.

These autonomous taxis have the capacity to seat three passengers in the back seat, with no passenger allowed to sit in the front. The fares are expected to be similar to the charges for limo taxis, which are 30% higher than the fares for regular taxis in Dubai.

RTA started a collaboration with a US-based self-driving technology company Cruise to launch driverless taxis in Dubai. The emirate will exclusively have Cruise autonomous taxis until 2030.

Cruise has started the digital mapping of the Jumeirah 1 area by deploying 5 autonomous taxis for data collection and technology testing. This area has also been chosen for the initial roll-out phase of 10 autonomous taxis later in 2023 because of its strategic location and cultural tourist attractions.

Cruise is also expected to launch its shuttle-like Cruise Origin in Dubai, which will accommodate 6 passengers.
