In January 2024, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced an upgrade to the nol card system, introducing digital nol cards that can be used via mobile phones. This aims to enhance the convenience of public transportation for commuters.

Testing Phase Underway

Digital nol cards are currently being tested at various Dubai Metro stations. The RTA, in collaboration with Samsung, is overseeing these trials. While the exact launch date is still uncertain, the complete rollout is anticipated by the end of 2025.

Functionality of Digital Nol Cards

The digital nol card will work just like the physical card, offering the same functionalities. Commuters will need to download the ‘nol pay’ app from the App Store or Google Play to use the digital card. This app will also feature route planning, trip booking, and prepayment options, providing a seamless travel experience. Users will be able to check account balances, travel history, ticket prices, and fare calculations through the app.

Nol Card Evolution

The nol card has been a key component of Dubai's public transportation since its launch with the Dubai Metro in 2009. Over the years, it has incorporated various features, which are expected to be available in the digital version as well.
